The Urban Legends Reference Pages is a huge site devoted to the study of contemporary lore, and a vital, ever-changing one at that because the rumors we as a society encounter and the stories we tell are always evolving. Yet for all its size and the monumental respect accorded it by journalists and folklorists the world over, the Urban Legends Reference Pages (or snopes.com, as it is better known) is, surprisingly enough, the work of just two people who began this repository of their writings as a labor of love in 1995 and who have been adding to it ever since. There's no big sponsor behind the site, no special interest groups that have to be catered to; it's just a guy and a gal who get a kick out of researching odd stories.

The ads we display enable us to keep the site accessible to the millions of visitors who drop by to check out the latest suspect tales they've heard. We do work to not test our readers' patience too much by responsibly limiting the sales pitches confronting them to a minimum and keeping them as unobtrusive as possible. This often amounts to our turning down campaigns more worldly people would have said yes to, but for us having a site folks enjoy has always been the far higher priority.

Though we no longer actively solicit donations, those who are moved to assist the site are certainly welcome to do so. Such beneficences are directly channeled back into the site, going to support vital services like the search engine.
